CAPUAGATE Dance

Mission Statement: CAPUAGATE Dance aims to celebrate the rich cultural diversity in the UK by creating and performing high quality, provocative and daring dance for culturally diverse audiences.

It endeavours to provide accessible and inclusive dance performances, training and education programmes with the aim to reach new audiences and inspire and engage younger generations through dance.

We believe that dance has the power to change lives and through our work we aim to set the foundations of a multicultural legacy that nurtures, inspires, and develops new generations of dance performers.

CAPUAGATE Dance was founded in March 2019 by three individuals who had a strong desire to carve a space for themselves in a sometimes culturally selective North East dance scene.

Inspired by three young black men from Leeds, that eventually created one of the most successful and enduring repertoire dance companies in the UK (PHOENIX Dance Theatre), the founders of CAPUAGATE Dance sought advice from Martin Hylton (previously of PHOENIX Dance Theatre) and GATEWAY Studio in Gateshead.

Inspired by the desire, tenacity and, most importantly, talent of these three individuals, GATEWAY Studio Artistic Director, Martin Hylton started to support the group vision and aims, offering mentorship, guidance, and a home where the newly formed company can train and work.

CAPUAGATE Dance premiered their first work ‘PROSPECT’ at Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne in April 2019. Since then group expanded to seven dancers and meet two to three times a week to train, rehearse, collaborate and create new work. The group trains in a variety of of dance disciplines, from Ballet to contemporary dance techniques.

One of their classes is open to the public, allowing individuals with different dance, artistic and knowledge backgrounds, to train alongside the company, as well as promoting and encouraging the growth of company members and audiences.

Alongside the creation of new dance work, the company is currently designing an educational outreach programme aimed at schools and multicultural associations around Tyneside.

At present, the company is supported in kind by GATEWAY Studio, which offers studio space, office facilities, dance tutors and choreographers.
